Spain 2013, Granada - Corazon del Carbon (4.4.13)

Heading back to our hotel, we took a minor detour to this fourteenth century  caravanaseri, a unique presence in Spain. I have always been fascinated by caravanaseris. They seem so exotic and adventurous.
The first one we saw was in north eastern Iran. That was much bigger but this was much more well preserved. The building has survived being used as a  theatre and later as a charcoal burner's factory, the present name. I particularly liked the entrance gate with its Arabic inscriptions. I can only imagine the glory of its hay day...
