Spain 2013, Madina Az-Zahra - Zainab's Playground (11.4.13)

Zainab loved strolling around in the ruins. I had to be very patient with her walking pace. My daughter certainly likes her independence!

Seven km to the west of Cordoba, Madina Az-Zahra was built during the peak of the Corboban Caliphate and its excesses was one of the causes of its eventual downfall.

Between 936 and 961, when he died, Abd ar-Rahman III spent a third of the annual budget of the state on this palace and administrative complex measuring some 2km by 900m.

Despite archaeologists starting work on it a whole century ago, thus far only 10% of it has been excavated and only half of that is open to the public...
