The smooth tarmac road gave way to a heavily potholed one and then an unsealed one for a stretch. This picture is just into the potholed section.
The birds are clearly visible on the lake though without binoculars it's impossible to tell whether they were flamingos.
We completed the circuit of the lake, and a truly memorable few hours by its shores, and duly headed for the Sierra Nevada...
